Rich: Finding inspiration in unexpected places
Out of curiosity, folks will sometimes ask who is an inspiration or hero to me.
Since I rarely think in those terms, I have to stop and think about that answer.
Without fail, I always find the ones who have inspired me most were common folks with few, if any, uncommon traits or accomplishments. Parents, teachers and others who offered a kind word, encouragement or wisdom when it was most needed are the ones who stand out most in my mind.
But now I have found a hero, and from now on whenever anyone asks that question, I will immediately reply, "Sandy Mary Thompson."
I feel fairly certain that you have never heard of Sandy Mary Thompson, for she isn't famous or renowned for anything in particular. This probably is the first time her name has appeared in the newspaper, and I know that she has never been discussed on any of television's hot topics shows, nor do bloggers pound out opinions about her.
Sandy Mary, either by the grace of God, good genetics, good decisions or a combination of all, has accomplished a life that awes me. This awe comes from a woman who has seen many incredible people and feats up close and personal. Oh, but that Sandy Mary, she's got life down pat. She's my hero.

2009 Teacher of the Year pushes, inspires chorus students
Music class is a staging ground for sound when teacher Shelynn Scott is leading the chorus. Her students explore different beats and sing in different languages. They may study show tunes or dabble in the classics before presenting folk songs, which are kinder to tender voices changing with age, Scott said.
Kids of all ages still drawn to, inspired by handmade toys
Perhaps Santa senses magic in the mail like toymaker Christopher Purcell does when he opens his spirited letters.
Porter goes outdoors for inspiration
One of Athens' most celebrated artists for more than two decades, Mary Porter is best known for her vibrant, vibrating interior scenes of domestic chaos - Erma Bombeck's world reimagined via Vincent Van Gogh's painterly techniques. Porter has a knack for finding inspiration in the mundane imperfections of everyday drudgery - a sink overflowing with dirty dishes, a toy-strewn living room, a breakfast table set with mismatched crockery - and elevating them to moments of celebration.
