Hoops team inspires Eagles

The Athens Christian Eagles basketball program took a huge step forward last season.

Now the football team is looking to follow their lead.

The boys basketball team won only three region games the two seasons before Ron Link was hired to turn around the program. Link won eight in his first season before leading the Eagles to the Region 8-A title and an undefeated 19-0 region record. The basketball season ended with a 71-50 loss to Turner County in the Class A state semifinals.

The Eagles defeated Athens Academy three times. Previously the Spartans had dominated the Eagles. Athens Christian's 78-68 win on Jan. 16 was their first against Athens Academy in school history.

The football team has also had no success against Athens Academy, as they are 0-5 against the Spartans in school history. Their closest game, 41-26, came in 2007. Last season they lost 38-6 and finished 4-6 playing a region schedule for the first time since 2003.

Coach Bill Forman, who spent the past five seasons as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at South Forsyth, replaced Van Beacham as head coach of the Eagles.

"Coach Link has done a great job of building and I'm just reiterating what they've already heard," said Forman. "It's a new attitude, changing expectations, creating a new culture and a standard that they'd already established before I got here with the other sports."
