Enjoying the view from the top of the class
In high school, they finished first. They picked the hardest paths possible because they believed hard work alone could fulfill their parents' promise — you can be whatever you want when you grow up. They devoured AP classes and joint-enrolled in college. They studied all night if they had to, over the summers, too. They solved math problems in academic clubs for fun, led student councils, edited yearbooks, served the community through honor societies and agricultural organizations. They cheered and scored in sports for their school, worked to save money for college and nailed their SATs. All the while one letter continued to dominate their transcripts: A. Today, the Athens Banner-Herald presents the area valedictorians and salutatorians of the Class of 2009. We think you'll find these individuals are worthy of celebration during this season of high school commencements. Their speeches, along with the last steps they take with their classmates, truly serve as the beginning of another great achievement. ► Clara Starkweather Valedictorian, Cedar Shoals High School Extracurricular activities: Piano Performance, Interact Club, Tennis, Young Partners for a Prosperous Athens, Drawing, academic-based service organizations, crossword puzzles College: Duke University Scholarship: She is one of 15 (out of a pool of 27,000) to receive the A.B. DeVore inspires Spartans to victory
Seeking to bounce back from a disheartening Region 8-A loss on Wednesday, Athens Academy pitcher Russ DeVore might have saved the team’s season by text messaging some encouraging words to his teammates on Thursday.
Porter goes outdoors for inspiration
One of Athens' most celebrated artists for more than two decades, Mary Porter is best known for her vibrant, vibrating interior scenes of domestic chaos - Erma Bombeck's world reimagined via Vincent Van Gogh's painterly techniques. Porter has a knack for finding inspiration in the mundane imperfections of everyday drudgery - a sink overflowing with dirty dishes, a toy-strewn living room, a breakfast table set with mismatched crockery - and elevating them to moments of celebration.
Chesnutt discusses music, his inspiration, health care
As always, life is full of ups and downs for Vic Chesnutt. Current downer: the Athens songwriter is dealing with a lawsuit filed by a local hospital following surgeries that racked up bills in the range of $70,000.
Caine: Late-in-life achievements an inspiration
Some years back, a National Geographic TV special featured Norman Vaughn, who traveled in 1928-29 to the South Pole with Adm. Richard Byrd. Although he was warned against allowing his sense of adventure to get in the way of becoming a successful businessman, Vaughn couldn't get adventure out of his system, and lived an outdoorsman's life.
